Department of Global Health Photo Use Guidelines

In general, the Department of Global Health takes photographs for use only as part of the Department's ongoing intellectual engagement and outreach projects and not for commercial purposes. We also receive photos from faculty, students, and staff.

Photographs on our website may not be re-posted or published in any form by other parties without the written consent of the Department.

The Department policy is that any photo we have received and used in our brochures, website or other materials of patients, especially with HIV/AIDS or other stigma-related illnesses has the consent of the patient. In most cases, it is our preference to use images of patients who cannot be easily identified.

For more information about the ethics of photography in the development field, and the difference between "editorial" and "commercial," or "clinical" photography, please visit the excellent site at photoshare.org.   Scroll down this page for a subject release form. Photoshare is a service of the Knowledge for Health (K4Health) project, based at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Communication Programs, helping international nonprofit organizations communicate health and development issues through photography.
For more information about our photo guidelines, please contact the Communications Office for the Department of Global Health at (206) 543.8309 or ghrc@uw.edu.
